Idiom
A figurative or non literal phrase or expression that takes on a different meaning from its original form.
Eg: Money makes the world go round.
Hyperbole/ exaggeration
Deliberately exaggerates conditions for emphasis or effect.
Eg: i’m so hungry I could eat a horse.
Pun
A joke or type of wordplay in which similar senses or sounds of two words or phrases are confused.
Eg: he said I was average, but he was just being mean.
Repetition
We’re a word or phrases used multiple times to emphasize meaning.
Eg: too much too soon.
Syntax
The usage of word, arrangement and punctuation to create one effect on readers.
Eg: Facebook, Instagram… (instead of using etc)
Rhetorical device
Words are phrases that convey meaning provoke response from the audience and persuade them.
Eg: all of these terms
Rhetorical question
A question that is not answered because its answer is obvious or obviously desired.
Eg: “social media for teenagers, threat or asset?”
Alliteration
The repeating of the the same letter or sound, especially constant sounds
Eg: Micky Mouse
Metaphor
A Comparison of two unlike things.
Eg: HE is a LION on the field
Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using LIKE or AS.
Eg: her eyes are as blue as the ocean.
Anecdote
A short story that is significant to the topic at hand, usually adding personal knowledge or experience to the topic.
Eg: the starting paragraph in the article “Zombie teens just need sleep”
