Rhetorical Devices:
These are devices used in poetry that appeal to the ear, that is, they are designed to create a certain effect based on the way they sound.
Alliteration:
The repetition of similar consonant sounds at the beginning of several words in a line of poetry.
Assonance:
The repetition of vowel sounds in a line of poetry.
Consonance:
The repetition of consonant sounds in the middle or at the end of several words in a line of poetry.
Repetition:
The repeating of the same word or phrase in one or more lines of poetry.
Refrain:
When a word, or a group of words, is repeated regularly in a poem, usually at the end of each stanza.
Onomatopoeia:
The use of a word whose sound suggests its meaning.
Euphony:
A combination of pleasant, agreeable sounds.
Cacophony:
A combination of harsh, clashing sounds. This is the same as dissonance.
