Poetic Structure:
Poems may or may not have one or more of the following poetic structures.
Rhyme:
The repetition of sounds at the end of two or more lines that appear close to one another in a poem.
Internal Rhyme:
when the rhyming words occur within one line of poetry.
Free verse:
Verse written with no recognizable rhyme scheme, syllable count, or metre.
Metre:
The arrangement of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. Also known as the rhythm.
lambic Pentameter:
A line of poetry written in five pairs of an unstressed and a stressed syllable.
Blank verse:
lambic pentameter written with no rhyme scheme.
Speaker:
The imaginary voice assumed by the writer of a poem. The character who says the poem. Sometimes known as the narrator.
