Allusion
makes brief reference to a historical/literary figure, event, or object to create a resonance or symbolic meaning. (ex. Trimalchio, Castle Rackrent)
Parody
Satirical imitation of work of art to ridicule style
Pun
play on words (2 meanings)
Irony
Dramatic: audience knows but character doesn’t
Verbal: opposite of what is said
Situational: ex. cancer researcher dies of cancer
Euphemism
substitution of a milder expression in place for a blunt one. (passed away for dead)
Foreshadow
hints/clues to what’s going to happen
Allegory
Narrative using symbolism, extended metaphor (ex. Garden of Eden in Osiris and Iris)
Symbolism
using concrete object to represent something abstract
Archetype
symbol that transcends cultures
Simile
using ‘like’ or ‘as’
Metaphor
compares w/out ‘like or ‘as’
Imagery
Adjectives, adverbs, similes + metaphors to create a picture. (ex. blood, garment, illness, animal, and light/dark in Macbeth)
Personification
giving human or living qualities to a non-living thing (wind howled)
Rhyming couplet
two lines of poetry that rhyme
Alliteration
repetition of beginning sounds
Paradox
statement that seems self-contradictory, but is true
Pathetic fallacy
attributes human feelings to inanimate things like nature (use of heat to reflect tension of Gatsby, Daisy, Tom, and Nick)
