Declared noblemen guilty of a crime against the crown

thomas Howard (Duke of Norfolk) was attained after Bosworth but was released from prison and given back earldom of Surrey to suppress the Northern Rebellion in 1489.
what was retaining?
Reserving an army (nobles had men who served them as well as fought in their private army - needed their nobleman’a badge (livery) to confirm Royal service.

Had to obtain a special license to obtain men. Lord Burgervenny was set a £70,000 fine for reserving an army of 471 men

Contracts that ensured a promise of loyalty - those who signed only had to pay the King money back if they were to break their contracts.
