What happened in March, 1848?
51 representatives from 6 states met up to discuss the possibility of unity and on March 5th, they decided that representatives from all German states should meet. Meanwhile, in Prussia, on March 13th, Austrian troops were sent to shut down a demonstration. On the 18th, Frederick William IV finally accepted a new German Constitution. On the 21st, Frederick William appeared on the streets to show support for the revolution.

Yes, in most states, because they didn’t want a full revolution (changing the rulers), they only wanted to change the system

- Wanted to created a new constitution but no agreement was reached on what laws
- Majority wanted a monarchy, minority want a republic
- Difficulties figuring out where the Borders of Germany might lie, some wanted Austria included, other didn’t
- Couldn’t decide if Holstein and Schleswig would be Denmark’s or Germany’s
What was the Zollverein?
The Zollverein was a customs union created to get rid of restricted trade in 28 out of 39 German states. Internal tariffs were removed. As Austria was not part of this union, Prussia was the acknowledged leader
