16
Q

What is a reflex action?

A

A rapid action that happens without us thinking.

17
Q

What does a receptor detect?

A

A stimulus.

18
Q

What does a sensory neurone do?

A

Send a signal to the relay neuron.

19
Q

What does IVF stand for?

A

In vitro fertilisation.

20
Q

When is IVF used?

A

When the mans sperm is of poor quality or quantity.

21
Q

What is IVF?

A

When the egg is fertilised outside the women’s body and then implanted back into her uterus.

22
Q

What are the three stages of drug testing?

A
  1. The drugs are tested using computer models and human cells grown in the lab. 2. Testing on animals to see the side effects.
  2. Then tested on healthy volunteers to check they are safe. Then on patients :)))
23
Q

What does a motor neurone do?

A

Sends signals to the effector.

24
Q

What does the effector do?

A

Produces a response.

25
Q

What is the central nervous system?

A

The brain and spinal cord.

26
Q

What is the peripheral nervous system?

A

Nerve cells that carry information to or from the central nervous system.

27
Q

What is a receptor?

A

A group of specialised cells that detect a change in environment and produce an electrical impulse.

28
Q

What is an example of a receptor?

A

Skin, tongue, nose, eyes, ear.

29
Q

What is an effector?

A

Parts of the body - such as muscles and glands - that produce a response to a detected stimulus.

30
Q

What is a synapse?

A

Where two neurones meet and there is a tiny gap called a synapse.

31
Q

What does statin do?

A

They lower blood levels and help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

32
Q

What does cannabis do?

A

Increase risk of mental illnesses.

33
Q

What do steroids do?

A

Enhance athletic performance.

34
Q

Whats is thalidomide used for?

A

Used to treat leprosy and bone cancer.

35
Q

What is an auxin?

A

A plant hormone.

36
Q

What do auxins do in plants?

A

They change the rate of elongation in plant cells. Cells in shoots grow more and cells in roots grow less.

37
Q

What is tropism?

A

A ‘tropism’ is a growth in response to a stimulus.
