Revision - Environment 2 Flashcards
Climate action, natural disasters
What is a geological natural hazard?
Related to the earth’s crust - earthquakes and volcano eruptions.
What is a hydrological natural hazard?
One that affects water e.g. floods, avalanches, mass movement with moisture as the trigger.
What is a meteorological natural hazard?
Thunderstorms - not as severe.
What is an oceanographic natural hazard?
Sea level changes, mostly measured over time.
What is an extraterrestrial natural hazard?
Where there is space involved e.g. a meteor strike.
What is an example of the economic affect of a ND? (HK)
Hurricane Katrina costed $120 billion
What have the affects of climate change been on the tides?
The sea levels have risen, meaning land around it is damaged, storm surges.
What are the affects of sea level rise?
If the ice continues to melt, there will be a sea rise of 65m. Population displacement, urban flooding, interrupts supply of drinkable water
What is earth’s albedo?
It is clouds which reflect solar radiation back into space. A higher amount is required, but too much may bring on an ice age.
What are the disadvantages of creating more roads to reduce congestion?
It will generate more traffic. Any policy that reduces congestion without making driving more expensive will attract new traffic.
How do we stay more resilient?
Planning, having multiple options or alternatives, good quality training for those working in these situations.
