Low pressure=
Depression
High pressure
Anticyclone
Warm front=
Low pressure/depression
cold front=
High pressure
Direction of rotation in depression
Anti clockwise
Direction of rotation in anti cyclone
Clockwise
Weather in a depression
Cloud/rain
Weather in an anti cyclone
Fair/warm/dry
Example of a depression
Hurricane Katrina
Explanation of anticyclone
Cool air sinks and as it does has a higher water capacity so sucks up all the clouds from the atmosphere, resulting in clear, dry weather
Explanation of depression
Warm air rises and as it does, rapidly loses it’s water capacity and therefore clouds are formed, resulting in rain
Wildlife corridors
Where national parks are connected- this is established by planting trees and plants which encourages the migration of animals to different parts of the forest
Medical reserves
Where a pharmaceutical company buys a portion of the rainforest and protects it from developments but then use it to find drugs and cures for people
Biosphere reserve
Like a national park but more human activity can take place, the further you go from the centre
Eg. Unspoiled centre –> hunting and gathering –> settlements –> unprotected forest
What are the 3 stages of a river
Upper, lower & middle
What are the features of the upper stage of a river
Water fall
V-shaped valley
Interlocking spur
Fast flowing
Main processes at the upper stage of a river
High Erosion
NO DEPOSITION
What are the features of the middle stage of a river
Meanders
Ox bow lakes
River speed slowing down
Processes at the middle stage of a river
Deposition
Erosion
River speed slowing down
Give features of a lower stage of a river
U shaped valley
Flood plane
Flat valley floor
Estuary
Delta
Main processes in the lower stage
Deposition
Slow moving river
What happens at the inside bend of a meander
Deposition of sediment
Travels more slowly on the outside than the outside
How is an oxbow lake formed?
The rivers meander gets cut off from the rest of the river
The deposition from the river makes the oxbow lake separate from the rest of the river
