CBD
Central business district of a town or city, with a large concentration of offices and shops
Inner city
Area surrounding the CBD. Characteristically an area of older, high density housing with old factories and warehouses
Redevelopment
Urban improvement scheme that involves upgrading of existing buildings
Squatter settlement/shanty towns
Parts of towns or cities usually in LEDCs where people live in low cost, self built housing
‘site and service’ schemes
Initiatives that improve housing by providing plots of land with essential services. Settlers them build their own homes.
Amenities/facilities
Services provided for people either in their homes or in their locality
Tenure
Type of ownership (eg. Rented, owner occupied)
Owner-occupied
Type of housing tenure where residents have bought or are buying their home
Public/private rented
Rented from council/land lord
Housing association
An organisation given government grants to buy/build or improve housing usually for rent. A high proportion of tennants are from housing lists
Housing type
Classification of housing according to whether it is detached, terraced etc.
Socio-economic group
Classification of people according to their occupation (eg. Professional, manual, skilled)
Services/service provision
Facilities provided for the general public
