Q

What were the 5 common reasons for promoting segregation of sexes in sport and what did Coggan, Hammond and Hold have to say about them?

A
  1. Makes the results less predictable (like weight classes)
  2. If women beat men it will cause violent responses from men
  3. Giving up the sexual segregation would mean women would nearly always lose which would be too discouraging
  4. Female and male sports are different (synchro vs NHL)
  5. Females face social discrimination already, segregation would balance sport by giving opportunity to excel.
    Rebuttal:
    1,3,5: Promote segregation
2: Intolerance is not a legit reason
  6. Even if one sex is better at particular sport, the other should not be restricted due to “poor performance”

A
