What should you have before going into a patients room?
All of the equipment and tools that you will need and proper PPE. You cannot leave the patient alone
How do you know that the patient is yours?
look at the patient ID wrist band, and compare to chart
First interaction with patient (intro)
say your name, title, professional status and why you are there.
Find out how the patient would like to be called.
Inform the patient of goals and outcomes.
Allow the patient to ask questions and decline treatment.
Who does the medical power of attorney default to if one isn’t assigned
Spouse or parent (for child under the age of 18)

Steps for hand washing
1) remove jewelry
2) use warm water
3) west wrist, hands, and fingers with fingers pointed downward
4) apply soap and use friction
5) wash for 30 secs
6) rinse downward
7) dry completely
8) use towel to turn off the water
Universal Precaution
treat everything at infectious
wear gloves and PPE when appropriate
Cycle of cross contamination
1) reservoir and host
2) method of exit
3) method of transmission
4) method of entry into new host (if susceptible)
5) new infection
Contact isolation (MRSA and VRE)
patient may not be actively “sick”
PPE: gown and gloved
Airborne Precautions (TB and Chicken Pox) (+ contact)
TB: need special negative air pressure room
there should be an Ante room (donned prior to entering) (doffed in ante)
PPE: gown, gloves and N-95
Droplet Precautions (airborne + or Contact +) Flu or covid
PPE: mask, gown, gloves, goggles
