Ergonomic Intervention Flashcards
What is ergonomics?
The study of the interaction between the worker and their work environment. How is their posture in work?
The continuum of practice
1) repetitive stain syndrome assessment
2) Functional capacity evaluation
3) industrial disability assessment
What is involved in the repetitive strain syndrome assessment
1) postural analysis and intervention
2) movement analysis and retraining
3) ergonomic analysis and intervention
What is involved in the functional capacity evaluation
in a workers comp environment the PT will recreate the work environment to see if the patient is able to tolerate the workload
what is involved in the Industrial Disability Assessment
determines if an individual is able to do anything in the field of work. PT does not run this but they can assit with it. we can not say that people are disabled, we can only say that this person cannot do (blank) things at work
Continuum of analysis seeks to address
How static and dynamic posture is related to a patients function, task, or primary life role
Posture definition (Kendall and Kendall)
the static positioning of joints and body segments
movement retraining
the promotion of the maintenance of optimal postures during ADLs, repetitive tasks and athletics
What is the Functional Capacity Evaluation
a set of tests, practices, and observations that are combined to determine the ability of the evaluated patient/client to function in a variety of circumstances, most often employment in an objective manner. Determines what a worker can and cannot do
what are somethings that we should ask about with posture?
Standing, Sitting, and Sleeping
Proper lifting in care of the back
back neutral, wide base of support, load close, use legs, dont twist, get help when needed
why lift with the legs?
- larger muscles = more force production
- LE joints are more stable then the spine muscles
-muscular co-contraction leads to more GTO activity and better balance
Twisting when lifting can lead to
- asymmetrical load bearing across spine and trunk
- poor balance
-slack in overlapping annular rings of the disc - non couples movement patterns at facets; isolates train points and facets impingement
what to look for in gait or running analysis
- Patellofemoral tracking
-supination/pronation of the foot
-limited ROM
-Achilles tendinopathies
what to look for in the upper quarter?
scapular positioning and GH mobility
