Q

Appositional bone growth

A

Osteogenic cells differentiate into osteoblasts that add bone matrix under the PERISTEUM

Osteoclasts remove matrix at inner surface compact bone to enlarge medullar cavity

Q

Compact bone functional unit and

Organization

A

Osteon

Osteocytes (in lacunae) lie b/w lamellae.
Canaliculi connect lacunae with each other and central canal

Central canal contains blood vessels and nerves

Q

Long bone growth steps

A

Chrondrocytes divide producing new cells.
New cells push old cells towards diaphysis.
These elongate causing lacunae to enlarge
Surrounding matrix calcifies
Eliminates movement of nut and they die
Leaves spaces separated by calcified cartilage
Osteoblasts and osteoclasts move in and transform into spongy bone
