Review Flashcards
Qualitative Observation
Observations based on information you get through your 5 senses.
Example: The liquid was light blue in colour
Quantitative Observation
Observations based on measurment or counting.
Example: At the end of the experiment there was 3g of precipitate.
Physical Change
A change in the form or state of a substance without forming a new one.
Example: Ice melting to water (Solid to liquid).
What are the 5 Signs of Chemical Change?
1) New colour
2) Heat or light is given off
3) Bubbles or Gas form
4) Precipitate (Solid) is formed
5) The change is diffucult to reverse
Ion
Charged atom that gains or looses electrons.
Polyatomic
More than one atom together.
Example: OH, SO4
Molecular
A compound made of two non-metals.
Example: CCl4
Ionic Compound
Compound made of a metal and a non-metal.
Example: NaCl
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which you can only see one phase throughout.
Example: Milk
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture that you can see two or more phases throughout.
Example: Pizza with toppings
Compound
More than one element bonded together.
Atom
The smallest portion of an element.
Molecule
More than one atom bonded together.
Solution
A liquid mixture where the separate parts cannot be seen.
Mechanical Mixture
A mixture where each individual part can be visibly seen.
Where are metals and non-metals located on the periodic table?
Metals: The left of the staircase
Non-metals: The right of the staircase
Matter
Anything that has a mass and takes up space.
WHMIS
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
Malleable
How easily a material is bent.
Ductile
How easily a material is drawn into wires.
Soluble
A substance that dissolves in water.
Viscosity
How easily a substance flows.
Cation
Looses electrons (+).
Anion
Gains electrons (-).
