Review 2 Flashcards
Contingency (Cross Tabulation) Table
display counts of two or more variables. Used to calculate probabilities from relative frequencies.
Relative Frequency
used to calculate probabilities from frequency tables. It tells you the proportion of cases in a category compared to the total.
Probability
A numerical statement about the likelihood that an event will occur
Fundamental Rules of Probability
- The probability, P, of any event occurring is between 0 and 1, inclusive
- The sum of the simple probabilities for all possible outcomes of an activity must equal 1
Marginal Probability
The simple probability of a simple single event occurring
Joint Probability
The probability of two or more events occurring together or one right after the other
Conditional Probability
The probability of one event given that another event has occurred
Independence
When one outcome does not influence the probability of another outcome
Collectively Exhaustive
A set of events that covers all of the probability space
Factorial
mathematical operation that is shown with an exclamation point
Permutation
used to calculate the number of possible arrangements when selecting a subset of objects from a larger group, and the order of the objects matters
Combination
used when selecting a subset from a group, but the order of the objects does NOT matter.
Multiplication Rule
used when there are multiple independent outcomes that need to be combined
Data
information that has been collected for reference or analysis.
Percentile
Values of the random variable X that divided a distribution into 100 equal parts
