Review 2 Flashcards
Experiment?
Manipulation of the independent variable to see what effect it has on the dependent variable
Aim?
Statement which explains what the experiment is attempting to achieve
Hypothesis?
Prediction of the outcome of the study
Different types of hypothesis?
Alternate
Null
One tailed
Two tailed
Alternate hypothesis?
Predicts that the independent variable will have a significant effect on the dependent variable
Null hypothesis?
Predicts that the independent variable will not have a significant effect on the dependent variable
One tailed hypothesis
A directional hypothesis that predicts the nature of the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable
Two tailed hypothesis
A non directional hypothesis that predicts the nature of the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable, but the direction of the effect isn’t specified
Experimental designs?
Describes the way participants are allocated to experimental groups
Types of experimental designs
. Independent
. Repeated
. Matched Pairs
Independent Measures?
Different participants in different conditions
Repeated measures
Same participants in different conditions
Matched Pairs
Different participants in different conditions but match with some key factors.
Independent Measures.
(Strengths)
. No demand characteristics
. No order effects
Independent Measures
(Weaknesses)
. Individual differences
. More participants needed
