Reversible reactions and dynamic equilibrium Flashcards
What is a reversible reaction?
A reaction where the products can react together to form the original reactants
What is equilibrium?
When the rate of forward reaction is equal to the rate of backwards reaction
What is dynamic equilibrium?
Equilibrium in a closed system where the reactions occur at exactly the same rate in each direction
What is a ‘closed system’
Where nothing can escape or get in
If in the reaction it’s endothermic in one direction, what is it in the other?
Exothermic
What happens if you decrease the temp in a reversible reaction?
Equilibrium will shift to the exothermic direction
What happens if you increase the temperature?
Equilibrium will shift to the endothermic direction
Changing pressure only affects what?
Gases
What happens if you increase pressure?
The equilibrium tries to reduce it- it moves in the direction where there are fewer molecules of gas.
What happens if you decrease pressure?
The equilibrium tries to increase it - it moves in the direction where there are more molecules of gas
What happens if you change the concentration of either reactants or products?
The system will no longer be at equilibrium
What happens if you increase concentration of reactants?
The system tries to decrease it by making more products
What happens if you decrease concentration of product?
The system tries to increase it again by reducing amount of reactant
