Reversible reactions Flashcards
1
Q
Le Chatelier’s principle
A
When a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change, the system, reacts as to oppose the chance
2
Q
Factors affecting equilibrium
A
Concentration, temperature, pressure and catalyst
3
Q
Changing concentration (reversible reaction)
A
N2 + 3H2 = 2NH3
- If I add more N2, reactions tries to remove the N2 and the reaction goes right
- If I add NH3 then the reaction goes to the left
4
Q
Changing temperature (reversible reaction)
A
- If I make reaction hotter, the reaction tries to remove heat and the reaction goes to the left (endothermic)
- If I make reaction colder, the reaction tried to add heat thus going to the right (exothermic)
5
Q
Changing pressure (reversible reaction)
A
- If I increase the pressure, reaction tries to decrease the pressure and goes to the side with fewer molecules (usually the right)
- If I decrease the pressure then the reaction tries to increase it, so it goes to the side with more molecules (the left)
6
Q
What happens if you add a catalyst to reversible reaction
A
-Catalysts speed up reversible reactions both forwards and backwards, they don’t change the position of equilibrium, it is just reached faster
