Rates of reaction Flashcards
How to calculate the concentration
Number of particles/ area
For a reaction to take place…
Particles must collide and collisions must have enough energy to react (activation energy)
How to calculate the rate
1000/ time
Temperature and rate
At lower temps, particles have less energy and make less frequent collisions but at a higher temp, they make more collisions (higher rate)
As temperature increases particles…
Particles have more energy, move faster, collide more and they have more energy to meet the activation energy
Surface area and rate
Lower surface area= slower reaction, higher surface area= quicker reaction
As surface area increases…
More particles for collisions, particles collide more often, each collision has same energy so there is no change to the activation energy
Catalysts
Speed up reactions without getting used up and they lower the activation energy
