Retroperitoneal organs of the posterior abdominal wall Flashcards
What is a retroperitoneal organ and give 3 examples
An organ that has parietal peritoneum on the anterior surface, aorta, IVC, kidneys and suprarenal glands.
Where is the kidney located
They are located very close to the posterior abdominal wall, has the diaphragm directly above it.
What is the role of the minor calyx
collects urine from the kidneys
What is the role of the major calyx
Formed from the coming together of minor slices, usually 2-3 per kidney.
What is the renal pelvis
The coming together of the major calices
VAN of the kidney
Renal artery, Renal vein (takes blood into the IVC) and Renal pelvis (leads to the ureter).
Outline the suprarenal glands
they are located above the kidney, separated from the kidney in own fascial compartment, vessels: suprarenal arteries and veins. they are responsible for corticosteroids such as cortisol (cortex) and adrenaline in the medulla.
Describe the ureters
Very muscular duct and are the site where kidneys stones can be lodged. most likely places: ureteropelvic junction, crossing iliac vessels and entering the bladder.
What are the two types of causes of renal pain
An increase in internal pressure or spasm smooth muscle of the renal pelvis. renal pain is generally caused by stretching of the capsule.
What is renal colic
Renal colic is a type of pain you get when urinary stones block part of your urinary tract.
State some kidney malformations
Supernumerary kidneys, renal fusion, ectopic kidney and polycystic kidney.
