- Transretinoic acid
- mild-moderate acne; sundamage
- Topical. binds all RARs; increases cell turnover and decreases cohesiveness b/w follicular epithelial cells
- red/crusted + hyper/hypo pigmentation
+ No pregnancy or lactation use

- retinoid
- acne
- Topical. Selective for RARbeta; affects differentiation and keratinization and inflammatory processes
- red scaly itchy skin

- 13-cis-RA
- severe recalcitrant acne
- Oral. Binds all RARs. Inhibit sebum and causes comedolysis
- photosensitivity, dry skin, corneal tox, hyperostosis and ligament calcification long term
+ TERATOGEN (NEED BC)

- photosensitivity + liver, msk, mucocutaneous vit a rxn; rarely: ICH and capillary leak syndrome
