Retinal detachment Flashcards
Two risk factors for retinal detachment
Myopia (due to larger eye balls)
Trauma
Symptoms of retinal detachment
Photopsia (flashes of light) +/- floaters
Gradual blurring / loss of vision
When is visual acuity normal in retinal detachment?
When the macula is spared
What may be seen on fundoscopy?
Tobacco dust in the anterior vitreous
Rhegmatogenous detachment =
full thickness tear e.g. myopia
Tractional detachement =
fibrous / vascualr membranes growing abnormally in the vitreous e.g patient with diabetic retinopathy
Exudative detachment =
Inflammatory / neoplastic condition leads to serous exudation from leaking BV beneath the retina.
Treatment for rhegmatogenous
Reattachment via laser cryotherapy and surgery with vitrectomy
Exudative treatment
Establish and treat the cause
Tractional treatment
Relieve the traction
