Central retinal artery obstruction Flashcards
Main arteries supplying the eye
Central retinal artery and posterior ciliary artery
What does the CRA supply?
Superior nerve fibre layer and inner 2/3 of retina
What does PCA supply
Rest of the ant. optic nerve, uvea (iris, ciliar body and choird) - ie deep retinal layers
What does CRA obstruction lead to?
Ischaemia of the inner retinal layers and therefore oedema of nerve fibre layers.
Typical retinal sign
White but with a cherry red spot
3 symptoms
painless loss of vision
profound drop in visual acuity
afferent papillary defect
6 potential causes
arteritis atheroma embolus migraine syphilis Herpes zoster
drug used to reduce intraocular pressure
acetazolamide
what should be started prophylactically
aspirin and a stain
what needs to be done on follow up
check for carotid bruitis and heart murmur
