Retina Flashcards
what are the three main types of retinal detachment?
traction
exudative
rhegtmatogenous
what causes exudative detachment?
a breakdown of the blood retina barrier. tumours and choroidal inflammation may also cause this
what causes traction detachment
contraction of fibrovascular tissue of the retina. can be due to diabetic retinopathy
what causes rhegtmatogenous detachment
a retinal break, a PVD may be present and seen as a giant tear, if pvd present free fluid can spread and will be rapidly progressive. if no pvd present will progress slower early treatment is also advised
when to refer suspected detachment
horseshoe tears, any pigment or blood in the vitreous, visible detachment,
what are treatments of detachment
once referred
ophthalmology will:
close break
internally- PPV and tamponade
externally - buckle and cryo
then create a permanent adhesion between the rpe and retina
what may px complain of with a macular hole
loss of central vision
metamorphisa
may be asymptomatic is other eye has good vision
