AO5 Orgel- Repentence in the Tempest is…
a largely unachieved goal
First intro line
Shakespeare’s final play “The Tempest” (1611) is problematic in terms of its genre, hence criticts are divided about its outcome: is it a play that achieves or bypasses forgiveness.
Point 1: Tragicomedie includes elements of the revenge genre such as cruelty towards the lower order characters, demonstrated through the animalisation and mistreatment of Caliban.
AO2:
AO3: Montaigne’s “Of the Cannibals”, Mandeville’s sketches, civilising missions, the barbaric native vs the civilised European.
AO5:
Point 2: The character of Prospero emulates the inability of humanity to change, which is evident in the cynical quality of his forgiveness speech in Act 4 and the epilogue.
Point 3: It could be argued that Shakespeare’s “farewell” play reinstalls morality, through the courtship of Miranda and Ferdinand who represent a renewed confidence beyond the comedy genre.
