Metatheatre: PROSPERO
Prospero’s “margic garments” as a DISGUISE
“pluck my magic garment from me” “lie there my art”- Prospero’s costume allows him to transform into the powerful magus and disconnect his crimes from his mortal being.
Metatheatre- HARPY A3S3
Summary: ALL ILLUSION. A theatrical spectacle designed to instil fear into Prospero enemies he remains unseen througout. This messanger as a mouthpiece for Prospero’s revenge, not just anthropocentric but told from a natural world’s response to the ugly traits of mankind.
ECO-CRITICAL: Nature as a power to dole out justice and punish the “morally dubious” courtiers.
Ao3: Harpy, part woman and part vulture which carries a bad omen.
Ao5: Katsan “visual mirror” of the royal situation of the time.
“To Prospero, magic means ABSOLUTE CONTROL”

Masques were compromised of singing, dancing, acting, music and dialogue. USED TO GLORIFY MONARCHS AND STRENGTHEN THEIR COURT.
Shakespeare NEVER wrote a true masque so A4S1 is an example of him dipping into this genre.
Witchcraft- James I Daemonology, John Dee?? double to P as the supreme magus.
COURT AS A BEACON OF KNOWLEDGE AND POWER, ALIGNS WITH NOTION OF PHILOSOPHER KING THROUGH OWNDERSHIP OF “MINE ART”
Ao2: P- “spirits which mine art…I have from their confines called to enact, my present fancies”= semantic field of servitude as seen through “confined”, and the larger flippant metatheatircal comment “present fancies”, puppet-master of the microcosm of the island
Ferdinand- “This is a most majestic vision and harmoniously charmingly… makes this place paradise” COMPLETE CONTRAST TO “hell is empty and all the devils are here!”- draws attention to the magical/spectacular quality of the island.
