Restorative Justive Flashcards
Main assumptions of RJ
The offender realise the consequences of their actions for the victims and to improve the relationship with the victims by repairing the damage they have caused
3 stages to restorative justice
Seeking cooperation
- from victims and the offender
Face to face meetings and mediation
- neutral setting
- victim ask for answer and say what they want to offender
- trained mediator accompanied both parties = manage discussion and offer support
Practical reparation
- offender repairs damage they have done
Strengths
Research
- investigated offenders reaction to RJ found that offenders responded positively towards it and there was a decrease in reoffending after participating
Cost effective
- strang found that face to face meetings led to reduction of recidivism
- cost effective and successfully deal with offending behaviour
Weaknesses
- Victims find it Harder to meet face to face than anticipated which may limit positive outcomes
- only work if victims and offenders agree to it therefor cannot be applied to all offenders eg murders
