What is anger management
Helps the offender to control their anger in order to prevent criminal acts
3 stages of anger management
Cognitive preparation
- learns what triggers their anger
- involves talking to therapist about past experiences
Skill acquisition
- identify skills needed from the 1st stage and teaches them to offended
- learns relaxation
Application training
- practise skills in role playing using imagined and real situations
- reduce criminal act in the future
Strengths
Research
- investigative the effects of anger management of 50 prisoners And control of 37 prisoners who did not go u dear intervention
- found 92% reduction anger levels shows effective
Weaknesses
Doesn’t reflect real life situation
- may be able to cope to role play but could revert to their former behaviour in real life situations as emotions are more intense than imagined
Only work when full engagement from prisoners willing to corporate with a therapist
Lack of evidence for long term effect puts offender at risk of. reoffending in the future
