Differntail Association theory Flashcards
Who developed differential association theory
Edwin Sutherland
How is criminal behaviour learned
Through interactions with others
Whta does person learn from interactions with others
Values, attatidues, techniques and motives
Why would someone more likely to commit a crime
Associates more with members of group that favour crime pro criminal attitudes than meme nerd with pro social attitudes more likely to display deviant behaviour
2 types of attitudes
Pro criminal and pro social
Weaknesses
Theory not complete
- fails to explain why some people commit impulsive or one off crimes
- eg commit a crime spontaneously without forethought with no favourable association to criminality
Fails to explain all types of crime
- eg embezzlement surrounded by ppl with pro social attitudes
Srengths
Research
- tested 1153 newly convicted criminals to see whether the differential association theory could explain criminal behaviour, found most cases it was a good predictable in MEN
Explain high crime rates
- high crime rates in certian area more than others
- so,some grows up in an area with high crime rate exposed to more pro criminal than pro social attitudes
- more likely to imitate behaviour
