restorative justice Flashcards
what is restorative justice?
Restorative justice is a voluntary programme which focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation with victims.
how does restorative justice work?
- Based on the principles of healing and empowerment
- a trained mediator supervises a meeting between the offender and victim.
- an opportunity for victims to confront the offender and explain how the crime has impacted their life.
- The offender can see the consequences of their actions and take responsibility for the crime they committed
key features of the process - offender and victim
● Focus on accepting responsibility and positive change for offenders
● Requires the offender to play an active (not passive) role in the process
● Focus on positive outcomes for victims as their voice is heard
Not all restorative justice programmes are face-to-face and may instead involve:
● Financial compensation to the victim for the physical or psychological damage made
● The offender may repair damaged property themselves
● Can function as an alternative to prison in addition to community service or as an incentive for a reduced sentence
whats the role of the Restorative Justice Council (RJC)?
The RJC sets clear standards for restorative justice programmes and supports the victims and specialist professionals within them.
- The RJC advocates restorative justice in many areas including prisons, schools, workplaces and hospitals
