Restless Earth Flashcards
What is the asthenosphere?
The upper parts of the earth’s mantle where rocks are more fluid
What is the hydrosphere?
The layer of water around the earth
Which type of crust is thinner?
Oceanic
Which type of crust is thicker?
Continental
Which type of crust is more dense?
Oceanic
What is the outermost layer of earths crust called?
The crust
What is the order of the earths pieces going inwards?
The crust The lithosphere The asthenosphere The mantle Liquid core Solid core
Why do tectonic Plates move?
Because of Convection Currents.
These are caused by the heat coming from radioactivity in the core, which heats the magma. Magma closer to the Core is less dense and rises. As it rises it cools and turns over, this makes a current that pushes plates.
What sort of Crust has Basalt in it?
Oceanic
What is a Convection Current?
The circulation of magma caused by the heat of the core
What is Oceanic crust made of?
Basalt, with no crystals.
What is Continental Crust made of?
Granite, with crystals.
What sort of crust contains small crystals?
Continental
What sort of crust has granite in it?
Continental
How do we know Tectonic Plates move?
Pangea
We know of Pangea because of identical rocks and fossils
What is a plate boundary?
Where two plates meet each other
What direction are the plates at constructive boundaries moving in?
Away from each other
What landforms are created at Constructive Boundaries?
Volcanoes
Ridges
Give an example of a Constructive boundary.
The North Atlantic Ridge
North American moving from Eurasian Plate
What directions are plates at Conservative boundaries moving in?
They are moving in opposite or the same directions and rubbing against each other.
What occurs at Conservative boundaries?
Earthquakes
Fracture lines
Give an Example of a Conservative Boundary
The San Andreas Fault
North American and Pacific.
What directions are plates moving in Destructive boundaries?
Towards each other
At what sort of Plate boundary does Subduction happen?
Destructive
What crust is involved in a Destructive boundary?
Both Continental and Oceanic
