Civil Liberties
Rights given to us and protected by the constitution.
Civil Rights
Policies the government makes to ensure equality for groups.
Due Process Clause
guarantees “due process of law” before the government may deprive someone of “life, liberty, or property.”
Equal Protection Clause
the idea that a governmental body may not deny people equal protection of its governing laws.
23rd amendment
grants presidential voting rights to citizens of the District of Columbia and representation for D.C. in the Electoral College.
24th Amendment
Prohibits any poll tax in elections for federal officials.
Equal Rights Amendment
“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”\
Title ix
Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.
No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance
The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)
The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public.
De Jure Segregation
Racial Discrimination by law.
De Facto Segregation
racial segregation by choice.
The Voting Rights Act of 1965
It outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern states after the Civil War, including literacy tests as a prerequisite to voting.
Affirmative Action
A set of procedures designed to eliminate unlawful discrimination among applicants, remedy the results of such prior discrimination, and prevent such discrimination in the future.
