  • Neurological processes inhibited (including body temperature regulation, movement and memory)
  • Dreams during this phase are essential for waking brain function
  • Resembles waking more than sleep
  • If you don’t get enough (decreased reaction time, depressed mood, disorganized thinking even hallucinations)
  • Refreshes cognitive processes

  • Slow synchronous waves instead of active spikes
  • 4 stages
    1. Dozing off lighter sleep
    2. Lighter sleep
    3. Deep/slow wave sleep
    4. Deeper/ slow wave sleep
  • immune system is more active than when awake
