A
- Engaging in routines that prepare the self for a comfortable rest (e.g. grooming and undressing, reading or listening to music to fall asleep, engaging in meditation or prayers)
- Preparing physical environment for periods of unconsciousness (e.g. making the bed, ensuring warmth or coolness and protection, securing the home)

Taking care of personal needs for sleep (e.g. napping and dreaming, sustaining sleep state without disruption, performing nighttime care of toileting needs and hydration)

REM (Rapid Eye Movement)
A
- 2am longest REM
- Neurological processes inhibited (including body temperature regulation, movement and memory)
- Dreams during this phase are essential for waking brain function
- Resembles waking more than sleep
- If you don’t get enough (decreased reaction time, depressed mood, disorganized thinking even hallucinations)
- Refreshes cognitive processes

NREM(Non-rapid eye movement)
A
- Slow synchronous waves instead of active spikes
- 4 stages
1. Dozing off lighter sleep
2. Lighter sleep
3. Deep/slow wave sleep
4. Deeper/ slow wave sleep - immune system is more active than when awake
