Rest And Sleep Flashcards
Non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM)
Comprises about 80% of sleep if effective aids and physical regeneration of body systems.
Some rolling of the eyes
skeletal muscle relaxation
slow metabolism- including slow pulse, lowered blood pressure, lower respirations, lower body temperature
Rapid eye movement sleep (REM)
“Paradoxical sleep”
Generally ranges from 20 to 50% of all sleep depending on a person’s age.
rapid brain metabolism
active and remembered dreaming
decreased muscle tone, rapid eye movement, increased gastric secretions,
irregular heart and respiratory rates
Long term Sleep apnea complications
Headaches, fatigue, dysrhythmias, severe hypertension, death
Central sleep apnea
Triggered by abnormality in respiratory center that controls breathing.
Can be caused by brain stem injuries, certain brain infections, muscular dystrophy, CHF and strokes.
Bruxism
Grinding teeth went asleep
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Measures level of activity in cerebral cortex of the brain.
brain waves are recorded through electrodes placed on scalp.
Electromyogram (EMG)
Readings measure muscle tone that is affected by REM sleep
Electrooculogram (EOG)
Measures eye movements that are specific to REM or NREM sleep patterns
