Rest And Sleep Flashcards
A state of rest accompanied by altered consciousness and relative inactivity.
Sleep
A condition in which the body is in a decreased state of activity, with a consequent feeling of being refreshed
Rest
Physiology of sleep
Two systems in the brainstem the RAS and the bulbar synchronizing region are believed to work together to control the cyclic nature of sleep
What completes a full cycle every 24 hours
Circadian rhythm fluctuations in a person’s heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, hormone secretions, metabolism, and performance in mood depend on circadian rhythms
Consists of four stages. Stage one and two consume about 5% and 50% of a person sleep time (light sleep) during the stages the person can be aroused with relative ease stays three and four represent 10% of total sleep time and are termed Delta sleep (deep sleep)
NREM sleep
This state consumes 20% to 25% of a person nightly sleeptime people who are awakened during the state almost always report that they have been dreaming
REM sleep
A decrease in pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, metabolic rate, and body temperature happen during what stage of sleep?
NREM
The pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, metabolic rate, and body temperature increase during this state of sleep
REM
A person passes consecutively through the four stages of an NREM sleep this pattern is then reversed and the person returns from stage four to stage III to stage two instead of reentering stage one and waking up the person enters into the REM stage and the cycle starts all over again
A sleep cycle most people go through four or five cycles of sleep each night
What is the accepted standard hours of sleep for adults each night?
Eight hours
But between 7 to 9
On average infants require how many hours of sleep each day?
14 to 20 hours
Growing children require how many hours of sleep each day?
10 to 14
Developmental considerations affecting sleep
Insufficient sleep affect growth and development and be a contributing factor in performance deficits and behavioral problems
Motivation affecting sleep
THe desire to be wakeful and alert helps overcome sleepiness and sleep
Lack of motivation causes one to fall asleep
Culture affecting sleep
Bedtime rituals, sleeping position and place, and pattern of sleep may vary based on culture
