Respresentation theorists Flashcards
Stuart Hall’s theory of representation
Representation is a process: Representation is not a fixed or objective concept, but rather a process of constructing meaning and giving meaning to things.
No single, true representation: There is no one true representation of people, events, or ideas. Instead, there are multiple ways to represent these things.
Producers try to “fix” meaning: Producers of media texts try to imbue a particular meaning to the piece of media they are working with, but this meaning can always be contested.
Language is crucial: Language is a key component of representation, as it is used to create and transfer meaning.
Conceptual maps and language: Hall argues that there are two prerequisites for communication: a conceptual map, where meaning is created, and language, where meaning is transferred.
Gauntlett’s theory of identity
Media and identity have a close relationship, media provides diverse yet contradictory messages about identity and expression
hooks’ theorybof intersectionality
-White supremacist capitalist patriarchy dominates media through ownership
-Multiple disadvantaging factors come together(intersectionality) to further disadvantge those in multiple minorities
Van Zoon feminist theory
Media representation of women: Van Zoonen argues that the media often represent women in stereotypical and limiting ways, reinforcing patriarchal values and ideologies.
Ideology and dominant social values: According to Van Zoonen, the media reflect and reinforce dominant social values and ideologies, which are often shaped by patriarchal norms and power structures.
Feminist discourse: Van Zoonen suggests that feminist discourse should consider why women enjoy consuming media texts that may appear to reinforce patriarchal values, rather than simply dismissing these interests as a false consciousness.
Reception theory: Van Zoonen draws on reception theory, which posits that audiences are active and can decode media messages in their own individual ways, rather than simply passively receiving them.
Butler’s Gender theory
-Gender is performative, there is no preconceieved notion of gender roles when we are born, we are raised to fit into the roles by society
Gilroy’s postcolonialism theory
- “Black Atlantic” - Slave trade forcibly created shared black culture and consciousness in Europe and America
- Postcolonial melancholia, Britain wishes they were still powerful and acts like it
- Us n them attitude to non natives
