Respondent / Operant Flashcards
Respondent behavior
Respondent behavior is behavior that is elicited by antecedent stimuli. Respondent behavior is induced, or brought out, by a stimulus that precedes the behavior; nothing else is required for the response to occur.
Formerly neutral stimuli can acquire the ability to elicit respondents through a learning process called
Respondent conditioning
Stimulus to Stimulus Pairing
2 stimuli are presented at the same time repeatedly for a number of trials which often results in one stimulus acquiring the function of the other
US
Unconditioned stimulus - a stimulus component of an unconditioned reflex-a stimulus change that elicits respondent behavior without any prior learning
NS
Neutral Stimulus - a stimulus change that does not elicit respondent behavior
CS
Conditioned Stimulus - a stimulus component of a conditioned reflex - a formally neutral stimulus change that elicits respondent behavior only after it has been paired with an unconditioned stimulus or another CS
Conditioned Reflex
A learned stimulus-response functional relation consisting of an antecedent stimulus and the response it elicits
Ontogeny
History of interactions with the environment
respondent extinction
The procedure of repeatedly presenting a conditioned stimulus without the unconditioned stimulus until the conditioned stimulus no longer elicits the conditioned response is called respondent extinction
Operant conditioning “
Operant conditioning refers to the process and selective effects of consequences on behavior.10 From an operant conditioning perspective, a functional consequence is a stimulus change that follows a given response closely in time and alters the occurrence of similar responses in the future. “
- Respondent extinction:
- Respondent extinction: conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presentedwithout the unconditioned stimulus
Operant Behavior
- Operant Behavior: any behavior whose FUTURE frequency is determinedprimarily by its history of consequences* Operant behavior is selected, shaped, and maintained by consequences thathave followed in the pastRespondent behavior is immediate. Operant is over time.
Operant Conditioning
- Operant conditioning: process and selective effects of consequences onfuture behavior* Reinforcer: a stimulus change that increases the future frequency of behavior thatimmediately precedes it* Punisher: a stimulus change that decreases the future frequency of behavior thatimmediately precedes it
