Respitory System Flashcards
Pathway of air starting from the nose
nostrils, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, glottis, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli
What is the difference between humans and birds
air sacs having no diaphragm
What happens to carbon dioxide when it is absorbed
Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid. The carbonic acid molecule disassociates to form the hydronium and bicarbonate ions. Hydronium ions are buffered by hemoglobin in the red blood cells while the bicarbonate ions move into the blood plasma.
The fluid-filled space between the two layers of the pleura (membrane) surrounding the lungs, facilitating smooth movement.
Pleural cavity
Two membranes of the lungs, one attached to the inside of the chest wall and the other attached to the surface of the lungs
parietal pleura and visceral pleura
