First the air goes down into the oesophagus and then it splits into two tubes call bronchi. The bronchi then progressively split into smaller tubes called bronchioles. The bronchiole end in alveoli where the gas exchange takes place. Oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses into the lungs
