Respiratory tract: Trachea Flashcards
What is the position of the trachea?
Sits in front of the oesophagus and below larynx
What maintains the structure of the trachea?
C shaped rings of cartilage
What does the trachea go into?
Right and left bronchi to each lung
What does it branch into?
Each lobe of each lung- 3 in right 2 in left- lobar bronchi
What do lobes branch into?
Segmental bronchi and many further branches ending in terminal bronchioles and alveoli
What happens as bronchi branch beyond the segmental bronchi?
Less and less cartilage until there is none in the alveolar ducts
What happens to the smooth muscle as the cartilage decrease?
Layer of smooth muscle increases
What does no cartilage and smooth muscle enable?
Bronchioles to alter in diameter to meet the oxygen demands of the body
