Muscles of inspiration Flashcards
What is the function of the diaphragm?
sheet of muscle that separates the thorastic cavity from the abdominal cavity
Only blood vessels and nerves can pass through
Where are the external intercostal muscles
Sit between the ribs on the outside of the ribs
What happens when diaphragm contracts?
phrenic nerve is stimulated- the diaphragm then contracts
Diaphragm flattens much more space in the cavity
What happens when the external intercostal muscles pull up and out?
Ribs are pulled upwards and outwards- increase the size of the thorastic cavity and will pull the lungs with it
Air pressure in the lungs will drop- causes pulling in of air from the external atmosphere
