Nasopharnyx

A
  • Located behind the nasal cavity
  • connects the nose to the mouth and contains the adenoid or the nasopharyngeal tonsil
  • The adenoid is a mass of lymphoid tissue that produces lymphocytes…a substance that reacts to bacteria or other disease causing microorganisms

The Nose

A
  • Made of cartilage, bones, muscles and skin and is located in the front of the nasal cavity
  • Consists of nostrils that have small hairs. These small hairs screen harmful contaminants such as dust, pathogens, and other particles before they reach the lungs

The Nasal Cavity

A
  • A hollow space located above and behind the nose
  • Its function is to purify, moisten, and warm air before it goes to the lungs
  • Its walls are lined with a protective mucous membrane that is composed of cells called epithelial cells
  • Each Epithelial cell has a cilia, a hair like extension that helps purify the air from contaminants

  • May be used to replace the function of the nasal cavity when needed
  • But does NOT moisten the air entering the lungs
  • Also lacks hair and protective mucous

The epiglottis

A
  • A flap tissue gate under the oropharynx that acts like a switch between the trachea and the esophagus
  • Opens the trachea and closes the esophagus to let air into the lungs
  • Prevents fluids or solid materials from going to the trachea/lungs
    • Causes choking
