Respiratory system part 1 Flashcards
1
Q
Nasopharnyx
A
- Located behind the nasal cavity
- connects the nose to the mouth and contains the adenoid or the nasopharyngeal tonsil
- The adenoid is a mass of lymphoid tissue that produces lymphocytes…a substance that reacts to bacteria or other disease causing microorganisms
2
Q
The Nose
A
- Made of cartilage, bones, muscles and skin and is located in the front of the nasal cavity
- Consists of nostrils that have small hairs. These small hairs screen harmful contaminants such as dust, pathogens, and other particles before they reach the lungs
3
Q
The Nasal Cavity
A
- A hollow space located above and behind the nose
- Its function is to purify, moisten, and warm air before it goes to the lungs
- Its walls are lined with a protective mucous membrane that is composed of cells called epithelial cells
- Each Epithelial cell has a cilia, a hair like extension that helps purify the air from contaminants
4
Q
The Oral Cavity
A
- May be used to replace the function of the nasal cavity when needed
- But does NOT moisten the air entering the lungs
- Also lacks hair and protective mucous
5
Q
The epiglottis
A
- A flap tissue gate under the oropharynx that acts like a switch between the trachea and the esophagus
- Opens the trachea and closes the esophagus to let air into the lungs
- Prevents fluids or solid materials from going to the trachea/lungs
- Causes choking
6
Q
Functions of the Respiratory system
A
- Helps expel CO2
- protect the body against disease-causing contaminants by clearing air passageway
- in production of sounds and houses cells that detect smell
- regulate the balance in acid and base in body tissues
