Respiratory System (Lungs and Alveoli only) Flashcards
What is inhalation vs exhalation?
Inhalation = breathe in O2
exhalation = breathe out CO2 AND H2O
What is the pathway of air in your body when you inhale?
Nose –> pharynx –> trachea –> bronchi –> lungs –> alveoli (which are located in the lungs)
Where are alveoli located?
IN THE LUNGS
inside your lungs are tubes that spread out like branches in a tree. At the end of the smallest tubes are structures that look like bunches of grapes –> these are alveoli
What are the function of alveoli?
tiny sacs of lung tissue which are THE SITE OF GAS EXCHANGE
O2 is taken from the sac and sent to the bloodstream and CO2 enters the sac and leaves via the lungs when exhalation occus
What is the benefit of having alveoli?
it increases the surface area of the lung so it can absorb lots of O2 and give off lots of CO2 (makes the lung more efficient)
