Respiratory system Flashcards
List the respiratory system
Oesophagus trachea bronchi lungs ribs heard diaphragm
Function of the heart
Pump blood around the body
Function of lungs
gas exchange
Describe the path that the blood takes through the heart
- enters through vena cava
- moves into right atrium
- pass through valve into right ventricle
- pumped to lungs through pulmonary artery
- Re enter oxygenated via pulmonary vein
- Goes to left atrium and moves to the left ventricle
- pumped to rest of body via the aorta
Why are the muscles on the left side of the heart thicker than on the right side
because the left side have to pump blood to the whole body so need more strength (longer distance) and the right side only pumps blood to lungs
What does aorta do
pumps blood to rest of body
What does vena cava do
carries blood from lower body to heart
what does pulmonary artery do
carry deoxygenated blood from heart to the lungs
Natural heart resting rate
60-100 BPM (beats per minute)
What does pacemaker do
control abnormal heart beat rhythm
How does pacemaker work
use electrical pulses
What do WBCs do
Produce antibodies to recognise and destroy pathogens
produces antitoxins to counteract toxins produced by pathogens
