Q

How does oxygen and carbon dioxide move in and out of the blood into the air sac?

A

The walls of the blood capillaries and walls of the air sac (alveolus) are very thin allowing oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through easily with diffusion. Oxygen and carbon dioxide move from high concentration to low concentration. Oxygen moves from alveolus to blood capillaries and carbon dioxide moves from blood capillaries to alveolus.

Q

What is the movement of the diaphragm and rib cage when you inspire and breathe in?

A

The diaphragm contracts (tightens) and moves downward when inhaling. The rib cage contracts and moves both upward and outward when inhaling.

Q

Why does the bottle lung model relate to real lungs?

A

Straw represents trachea
Balloon represents the lung
Plastic sheet represents breathing

Q

How does the air pressure change in the bottle when the plastic sheet is pulled on the lung model?

A

When the sheet is pulled there is less air pressure allowing the balloon (lungs) to fill with air. When the sheet is pushed there is higher air pressure causing the balloon to deflate. Because you are breathing in and out.
