Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the parts of the upper respiratory section?
nose, nasal cavity, sinuses, pharynx
What are the parts of the lower respiratory section?
larynx (voicebox), trachea (windpipe) trunk, 2 bronchus (right, left), bronchioli (branches), avioli (grapelike sacs), lungs
Describe inhalation?
1) air enters the body
- through the mouth or nasal cavity and(where it is warmed , moistened) here
-before entering the trachea (where it is filtered),
-and then enters the bronchi to get to the bronchioles to the alveoli aka pulmonary arteries, (where blood is
oxygenated) , and site where oxygen and CO2 are exchanged) aka gas exchange.
- Then the diaphragm contracts;
-to enlarge the thoracic cavity and draw air into the lungs.
- creates vacuum.
What happens to the diaphram during inhalation?
the diaphram contracts to enlarge thoracic cavity and draw air into the lungs , creates vacuum.
What happens to the diaphram during exhalation?
The diaphram relaxes ,
-passive process - lungs recoil and the respiratory muscles relax and the thorax decrease in size forcing air out.
What type of blood is transported via the pulmonary arteries?
The heart pumps deoxygenated blood into the lungs via pulmonary arteries.
Where is blood oxygenated?
The blood is oxygenated in the alveoli.
What type of blood is transported via pulmonary veins?
Oxygenated blood is delivered back into the heart via pulmonary veins.
What is external respiration?
The exchange of gases between the atmosphere and blood through alveoli.
What is internal respiration?
The exchange of gases between blood and the body cells.
What is the pleura?
The pleura membrane lines the lungs.
What is the job of the Cillia?
Cillia and mucus lines the bronchi to collect dust and germs.
What are the important functions of the respiratory system?
-gas exchange
-defends against pathogens
-responsible for sound, speaking, and singing
-regulate blood volume
-regulate blood pressure
-regulate pH of Blood
