Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the respiratory System?
The intake of oxygen, and the removal of carbon dioxide
What does the nasal cavity do
allows air to flow into the body through the nose or the mouth
what does the Pharynx do
Air flows down from the nose to the pharynx (and helps you digest foods)
Larynx function
From the pharynx, the oxygen flows to Larynx which controls out vocal cords and the air passage to lungs
what is the Trachea function
Carry oxygen to lungs
what does the Trachea look like in the respiratory system
Strengthened by the cartilage, and largest tube in respiratory system
What does the diaphragm do
Allows us to breathe (is a muscle) and allows us to inhale and exhale
Alveoli function
oxygen and carbon dioxide passes through, and is where gas exchange occurs
Why is the alveoli thin and moist?
thin and moist to allow the oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass though quickly and smoothly
What is gas exchange
oxygen diffuses into red blood cells and delivers oxygen to body
Where does gas exchange take place
between capillaries and alveoli
Bronchi function
main passageway to the lungs
Ribcage function
protects the vital organs and blood vessels (contracts and expands to breathe as well as the diaphragm
The respiratory equation is
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
How does the diaphragm work
(what it does)
When it tightens, it pushes out the ribs allowing air to be sucked in. As it relaxed, air is forced out of the lungs
