Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the two different parts of the respiratory system?
Upper and lower tract
What is included in the upper respiratory tract?
The pharynx, larynx and the nasal cavity.
What is included in the lower respiratory tract?
Trachea, bronchial tubs and alveoli
What does the nasal cavity do?
warms air, prevents dehydration, covered with mucus membrane and traps particles as well as cilia propelling particles towards the pharynx where they can be swallowed. ~
What are the 3 different types of pressures involved in breathing?
Atmospheric pressure, Alveolar Pressure and Intrapleural air pressure
What are some factors that affect pulmonary ventilation?
Alveolar surface tension, Lung compliance and Airway resistance - ALA
What are the different volumes that the lungs can be divided into?
Residual volume, tidal volume, inspiratory volume and expiratory volume.
What is residual volume?
The remaining volume of air in your lungs after forced exhalation.
What is tidal volume?
The amount of volume that totals from inhalation to exhalation of breath. In other words, the movement of air from inhalation to exhalation.
What is inspiratory volume?
Excess volume inhaled that is beyond the standard tidal volume.
