Respiratory System Flashcards
Cilia
Microscopic filaments bathed in nasal mucus that cover the surface of the tissue in the nose
Concha Bullosa
An (air-filled) cavity within a nasal concha, also known as a turbinate
Croup
An infection of the upper airway, which becomes narrow, making it harder to breathe
Diaphragm
The most important muscle of respiration, and separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity:
Dacrocystorhinostomy
A surgery done to create a new tear drain between your eyes and nose.
Decortication
A surgical procedure that removes a restrictive layer of fibrous tissue overlying the lung, chest wall, and diaphragm.
Empyema
A collection of pus in the pleural space
Epiglottis
Asmall, movable “lid” just above the larynx that prevents food and drink from entering the windpipe
Glottis
The opening between the vocal folds in the larynx
Indirect Endoscopy
Using a small mirror held at the back of your throat
Larynx
Your larynx (voice box) is a hollow tube in the middle of your neck. It helps you breathe and to make sounds.
Mediastinum
A space within your chest that contains your heart, pericardium and other structures.
Pleura
A thin layer of tissue that covers the lungs and lines the interior wall of the chest cavity. It protects and cushions the lungs.
Pneumonolysis
The separation of an adherent lung from the pleura, to permit collapse of the lung
Pneumothorax
When air gets inside your chest cavity and creates pressure against your lung, causing it to collapse partially or fully.
